Finally, the new version of my epic video on Breaker Boxes. ┬áThe video covers electrical safety, how breaker boxes are laid out and work as well as a discussion on the various kinds of breakers including 110/220 Volt varieties, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFI’s) and Arc Fault Interrupters (AFI’s).

  1. Hi,

    This is very educational video. I am planning to use an interlock kit to back feed 240V from generator into the main panel like what I saw in your panel. Your video shows the natural and ground bonded in main panel. What is the safe connection to back feed from generator? This is what I am thinking of doing:

    Generator Panel
    Live 1 30A Breaker 1 (single pole double breaker)
    Live 2 30A Breaker 2 (single pole double breaker)
    Neutral Neutral
    Ground Ground

    What are possible failure conditions where this connection can cause issues (like current flowing through ground making it dangeraous to touch conductive appliances)?

  2. Sorry for the delay – the alert email got lost! WHat you are doing is correct. Separating the gnd and neutral is good – when you run them together is when you can run into issues. IF yo have ground and neutral tied together and then neutral fails, the ground of the appliances become the neutral and then you become the path to ground when you touch it! Having them separate greatly reduces the chance of this happening. Loose the neutral, you still got the ground. Loose the ground, you still got the neutral – and unless their is a problem, the ground should not have any current on it anyway so loosing it should not cause a problem, unless you have a problem elsewhere..   3. Great you tube presentation. I don’t understand something. If the ground and neutral are tied together in the box. If you run a sub box how is it possible to keep the ground and neutral separate? What did I miss?

  4. They are tied together at the main box, then separated using a neutral and ground conductor going to the sub. In the sub, the bonding screw gets removed, separating the ground and neutral. This is for safety reasons – two separate paths back.
